- Notes:
Eugene Stock McCartney won the Rome Prize in 1914 and prepared a monograph on the military indebtedness of Rome to Etruria, beginning a long scholarly career that continued despite a much-traveled early career in teaching and a full-time job as editor-in-chief of the Humanistic Studies and other series for the University of Michigan Studies. A devoted teacher and scholarly publisher in the field of folk-lore, he devoted considerable service to the Michigan academy, in whose proceedings he published much of his work.
