W.B. Saffold came from an old and prominent Alabama family; his father and grandfather were both judges of the Alabama Supreme Court. Though he devoted 40 years to his alma mater, he could not prevent a decline in the study of Latin and Greek. When enrollments in classics courses were finally marginal, Saffold became professor of American history.
