NOTES

Henry A. Sanders began his career as a historian with an interest in Livy. He edited two books of essays on Roman history, contributing about half the total of Roman Historical Sources and Institutions (on the Tarpeia myth and the lost epitome of Livy) and collecting the essays of four of his students, the most important being John Garrett Winter, for Roman History and Mythology. Interest in the Oxyrhynchus Epitome of Livy led him further into the field of papyrology and he ultimately played a major role in developing and publishing the great Michigan collection of papyri. His great work was the final edition of Michigan papyri, comprising 37 mostly documentary papyri, 35 of which he painstakingly edited. They demonstrate how widespread was the use of Latin in Egypt in legal papers. The remains were more than usually fragmentary and the condition of the materials, the number of different hands employed and the lack of a body of similar papyri tested Sanders' diligence and patience to the full. He also edited the significant manuscripts of Biblical books dating to the fifth & sixth centuries bought in Egypt in 1906 by Charles L. Freer.
