Otto Gruppe studied at Berlin under Bonitz, Droysen, Haupt, Emil Hübner, Theodor Mommsen, and others.  His dissertation was completed under Haupt, Kirchhoff and Mommsen. He was appointed to the faculty of the Askanisches Gymnasium in Berlin at its founding in 1875. Gruppe’s lasting contribution was his study of mythic and religious texts which showed the development of Greek myth and religion. He also surveyed the role of ancient myth and religion from the Middle Ages to his own time.
