  • Notes:

    Mary Needler grew up in an academic family closely tied to the University College, Toronto, where her father chaired the German Department. Her younger sister, Winifred Needler (1904-87), became an eminent Egyptologist.  Following her graduation from Toronto, Needler took up graduate study at the University of Chicago under Paul Shorey (1857-1934). She returned to Toronto as assistant professor of ancient history, where she remained for the duration of her career, with an interruption for war service a a cryptographer.
